Hints after installing Windows XP Service Pack 2

If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer with Windows XP Service Pack 2, you may experience problems downloading files and/or running Chat or Whiteboard.

To fix this Internet Explorer problem, follow these steps:

  • Select Tools-->Internet Options from the Internet Explorer menu bar.
  • In the Internet Options window, click on the Security tab.
  • Click on Local intranet in the Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings field.
  • Click on the Sites button.
  • In the Local intranet window, click on the Advanced button.
  • In the second Local intranet window, enter http://webct.rpi.edu in the Add this Web site to the zone: field.
  • Click on the Add button.
  • Click on the OK button.
  • In the first Local intranet window, click on the OK button.
  • In the Internet Options window, click on the OK button.

Maple 9.5 running under Windows XP starts two executables -- java.exe and mserver.exe -- which use TCP/IP to communicate. Thus, the Windows XP SP2 firewall (and other firewalls) will detect this network activity. When the Windows XP SP2 firewall detects the network activity, click on the Unblock button.
