FAT | NTFS | Easier to share files | More secure file permissions | Easier to recover data from and troubleshoot | Small files take up less space | Compatible with other operating systems | Only compatible with Windows XP/2000 | Compatible with very old utilities and programs | Faster |
- After you have selected your formatting option, Windows will format the partition and begin installing files. When it finishes, your computer will reboot. After performing a number of automatic steps, Windows will display a Regional Settings dialog. For most users, the default settings are fine. If you are an International user and you would like to set your currency and other regional settings to a non-US location, simply Click the top Customize... button and select your country from the drop-down box in the screen that will appear, Clicking OK when you are finished. After these settings are to your liking, Click Next.
- You will now be prompted for your Name and Organization. Whatever you type in for your Name here will also become your default username on this computer. Unlike Windows 98, this does not have to be your RCS username, so you can choose whatever name you want. After Typing your name, Click Next.
- Now Windows will ask you for your Product Key. The Product Key may be found on the Windows 2000 CD sleeve. If you do not see the Product Key or Windows does not accept the Product Key, ask a Help Desk Consultant and they will be able to give you a valid key. After you Type the Product Key, Click Next.
- The next screen will prompt you for your Computer Name and Administrator Password. We recommend that you use your RCS username and laptop model for your Computer name (for example: doej2-t30), but you can choose any computer name you would like. Type your computer name, then Type your Administrator password. You must type your password twice to confirm it. It is very important that you remember this password. If you lose this password, you may lose access to your computer. After you type your password twice, Click Next.
- You should now see a Date and Time Settings dialog. If you want to set your computer to the correct time zone for RPI, Select (GMT -05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada) from the drop-down box under Time Zone. Otherwise, make sure your desired Time Zone is selected. Click Next.
- After a lengthy install, Windows 2000 will display a screen telling you that you have successfully completed Windows 2000 Setup. Click Finish and the computer will restart. After it boots up, it will display the Network Identification Wizard. Click Next on the Welcome screen, and Windows 2000 will ask you if you would like a certain user to be automatically logged in a startup. This is a useful option for most people, as they are the only person using their computer. If you would like a user to be automatically logged in at startup, Select the user from the User name drop-down box and Type the password you would like to use for that user. When you are finished, Click Next then Click Finish.
- You should now be logged into Windows 2000. To setup your laptop to access the Internet, make sure your laptop is plugged in to the campus network. Double-Click on the Internet Explorer icon on the desktop. The Internet Connection Wizard should open, displaying three options. Select I want to setup my Internet connection manually, or I want to connect through a local area network (LAN) and Click Next. On the following screen, Click I connect through a local area network (LAN) and Click Next. Leave the Automatic Configuration settings at their default and Click Next one more time. Windows now asks if you would like to setup an Internet mail account. Instructions on setting up Outlook Express to receive your RPI email may be found here. If you would like to setup your email now, Select Yes and Click Next. Otherwise Select No and Click Next. You have now finished setting up your Internet connection! Click Finish.
- Windows is now installed! After completing a Windows 2000 Installation, most laptops will require that you install specific drivers. For instructions on how to installing drivers, visit the Help Desk website and look under the Laptops category. We also suggest you visit Windows Update , but to do that you will first need to install drivers for your Ethernet Card.
Before you start, be absolutely sure you have a backup of any important data on your hard drive. This can be done through EZ-Snapshot or burning files to CD. Begin by turning off your laptop. Leave it off for a few seconds, then turn it back on. As the IBM logo is displayed, Press F12 on your keyboard. Your screen will display a list of devices you can boot from. Ask a Help Desk Consultant for the Windows 2000 CD. Place the Windows 2000 CD in your CD-ROM Drive and Select CD-ROM Drive from the list ( 3. by default). Press Enter. You should see Press any key to boot from CD... Immediately Press the Spacebar (although any key will work). If you don't press a key in time, you will have to reboot and repeat this step again. After booting off the CD, you should see a blue screen with Windows Setup at the top. It may take a few minutes to load drivers, but just be patient. Once the drivers are loaded, the title at the top will change to Windows 2000 Professional Setup and you will be given three options. You want to install Windows 2000, so Press Enter. Windows will now display a Licensing Agreement. To continue, you must Press F8 to indicate that you agree. Now Windows will prompt you to repartition your hard drive and select where you want Windows 2000 to be installed. If you are not sure how to do this, ask a Help Desk Consultant. It is very easy to unintentionally destroy all data on the hard drive during this process, so we recommend most users ask for help with this process. Once you have partitioned your hard drive, Select the partition on which you wish to install Windows 2000 and Press Enter. The next screen will display a number of options for you to format the partition on which Windows 2000 will be installed. Most options on this screen will erase all data on the selected partition. If you are trying to save data on the hard drive, we recommend you ask a Help Desk Consultant to assist you with this screen. Otherwise, you have two main options: Quick v. Normal and NTFS v. FAT. A Quick format is safer, faster, and generally the preferred choice. A Normal format will more completely erase the partition and can take up to an hour.
