  1. After you have selected your formatting option, Windows will format the partition and begin installing files. When it finishes, your computer will reboot. After performing a number of automatic steps, Windows will display a Regional and Language Options dialog. For most users, the default settings are fine. If you are an International user and you would like to set your currency and other regional settings to a non-US location, simply Click the top Customize... button and select your country from the drop-down box in the screen that will appear, Clicking OK when you are finished. After these settings are to your liking, Click Next.
  2. You will now be prompted for your Name and Organization. After Typing your name, Click Next.
  3. Now Windows will ask you for your Product Key. The Product Key may be found on the Windows XP CD sleeve. If you do not see the Product Key or Windows does not accept the Product Key, ask a Help Desk Consultant and they will be able to give you a valid key. After you Type the Product Key, Click Next.
  4. The next screen will prompt you for your Computer Name and Administrator Password. We recommend that you use your RCS username and laptop model for your Computer name (for example: doej2-t30), but you can choose any computer name you would like. Type your computer name, then Type your Administrator password. You must type your password twice to confirm it. It is very important that you remember this password. If you lose this password, you may lose access to your computer. After you type your password twice, Click Next.
  5. You should now see a Date and Time Settings dialog. If you want to set your computer to the correct time zone for RPI, Select (GMT -05:00) Eastern Time (US & Canada) from the drop-down box under Time Zone. Otherwise, make sure your desired Time Zone is selected. Click Next.
  6. In the Networking Settings dialog, Select Typical settings and Click Next. On the Workgroup or Computer Domain screen, Select No, this computer is not on a network. Where the text says WORKGROUP you may replace it with your desired workgroup. We recommend you set your workgroup to the dorm you live in or 'off-campus', but you can set your workgroup to anything you want. Once you have entered your workgroup, Click Next.
  7. On some computers, a Display Settings dialog will popup. Just Click OK. Windows will now tell you it has adjusted your screen and ask you to press OK if you can read the text. Click OK again.
  8. Windows should now thank you for purchasing Microsoft Windows XP and begin playing music. Click the Next button in the lower right hand corner of the screen. After windows checks for an Internet connection, it will ask you if this computer will connect to the Internet through a network. Select Yes and Click Next in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Windows will now ask if you are ready to register online with Microsoft. Select No and Click Next.
  9. Next Windows will ask you who will user this computer. You must Type at least one username. Unlike Windows 98, this does not have to be your RCS userid. After you have typed at least one name, Click Next. Click Next one final time. If you only created one user, it will take you directly into windows. If you created more than one user, it will take you to the windows login screen.
  10. Windows is now installed! Although Windows XP will support most hardware, we still suggest you visit the Drivers page for your specific laptop to ensure optimal functioning. We also suggest you visit Windows Update as soon as possible in order to prevent possible security hazards and fix known bugs.
  • Before you start, be absolutely sure you have a backup of any important data on your hard drive. This can be done through EZ-Snapshot or burning files to CD.
  • Begin by turning off your laptop. Leave it off for a few seconds, then turn it back on. As the IBM logo is displayed, Press F12 on your keyboard. Your screen will display a list of devices you can boot from. Ask a Help Desk Consultant for the Windows XP CD. Place the Windows XP CD in your CD-ROM Drive and Select CD-ROM Drive from the list ( 3. by default). Press Enter. You should see Press any key to boot from CD... Immediately Press the Spacebar (although any key will work). If you don't press a key in time, you will have to reboot and repeat this step again.
  • After booting off the CD, you should see a blue screen with Windows Setup at the top. It may take a few minutes to load drivers, but just be patient. Once the drivers are loaded, the title at the top will change to Windows XP Professional Setup and you will be given three options. You want to install Windows XP, so Press Enter. Windows will now display a Licensing Agreement. To continue, you must Press F8 to indicate that you agree.
  • Now Windows will prompt you to repartition your hard drive and select where you want Windows XP to be installed. If you are not sure how to do this, ask a Help Desk Consultant. It is very easy to unintentionally destroy all data on the hard drive during this process, so we recommend most users ask for help with this process. Once you have partitioned your hard drive, Select the partition on which you wish to install Windows XP and Press Enter. The next screen will display a number of options for you to format the partition on which Windows XP will be installed. Most options on this screen will erase all data on the selected partition. If you are trying to save data on the hard drive, we recommend you ask a Help Desk Consultant to assist you with this screen. Otherwise, you have two main options: Quick v. Normal and NTFS v. FAT. A Quick format is safer, faster, and generally the preferred choice. A Normal format will more completely erase the partition and can take up to an hour.
