First, you need to find the Symantec AntiVirus icon on the system tray (usually in the lower right hand corner of your screen). The icon looks like a yellow shield. Double click this icon.

1. The Symantec AntiVirus configuration dialog box should pop up. Click the Live Update button to start the update process.
   
   

2. The Live Update dialog box will appear. Click the Next button.
   
   

3. One of two things will now happen. If there are updates to download, your computer will begin to retrieve them from Symantec's server. You will see a screen that looks like this.
   
   
   
   If there are no updates to download, you will see the screen pictured below. Click the Finish button and try again in 2 to 3 days.
   
   

4. If there were updates to install, you will get another box once the download finishes. To have Symantec AntiVirus update its definition files, click the Finish button.
   
   

5. A smaller box will pop up and indicate progress toward updating the files. The bar may fill up several times.
   
   

6. After it has finished, click the Exit button on the main Symantec AntiVirus screen.
   
   

You computer now has Symantec's most recent virus definition files. Make sure you repeat these steps frequently to keep up to date.
