TreeSize Pro

      TreeSize Pro is a tool that will allow you too view a graphical representation of your hard drive. This can be very useful when you are looking for what files and programs are taking up the most space. Use this at your own risk! Deleting files to clean up space can be dangerous, if you do not know what the file is for it can cause programs or the entire computer to stop working. If this happens usually you have to reinstall the programs or the operating system. If you need help cleaning your computer please bring it in to the VCC Help Desk.

TextPad

      Textpad is a very powerful text editor that easily allows you to edit multiple files. It also had a reference built in for ANSI Characters, HTML Tag, HTML Characters, Control Characters and Dos Characters. It will edit and view files saved in a UNIX format, spell check, and use color coding for different types of code.

Winzip

      Winzip is a powerful zip utility that has a very nice graphical interface. It allows you compress files so they are easier to transfer. It include support for disk spanning, compression, decompression, and password protecting zip files.

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)

      AIM is an instant messaging program that is used by a very large number of students on campus. It allows you to chat with your friends over the Internet.

Mozilla

      Mozilla is a web browser, it is similar to Internet explorer but has some other features such as tabbed browsing. It also includes a mail and newsgroup client. Some other popular web browsers are Netscape Communicator, Opera, and Mozilla-Firebird (a browser only version of Mozilla with a few performance enhancements)

Macromedia Flash and Shockwave Plug ins

      Macromedia Flash and Shockwave are both media formats that are used on the Internet. They allow you to view interactive content with some really impressive graphics, sound and navigation. These plug ins allow you to view pages that include flash or shockwave content.

Filezilla

      Filezilla is an FTP program that allows you to connect to an FTP server to transfer files. It has a graphical interface, and can be used to transfer files to your RCS space remotely using RPI's FTP server (ftp.rpi.edu)

Putty

      Putty is an ssh client which will allow you to connect to the RCS UNIX servers. It is similar to SecureCRT which comes with the RPI Laptop's and is on the RPI Workstations.

WinSCP

      WinSCP is a graphical scp file transfer program. It allows you to transfer file to and from any ssh server through a secure connection. This is useful if you have ssh access to a server which is not running FTP.

Ad-Aware

      Ad-Aware is a program that is used to detect and remove adware and spyware. For more information see the Spyware, Adware and Pop ups section of the Help Desk Web site.

Media

Winamp

      Winamp is a media player. It allows you to play many different formats of music and video. It has many different features and plug ins.

Divx

      Divx is an encoding format for video files. Downloading the Divx codec will let you view videos that have been encoded in this format. It also included a specialized Divx player.

Quicktime

      Quicktime is another video format that was created by apple. Downloading quicktime will allow you to view any quicktime files.

Real Player

      Real Player (now called RealOne) is a media format that is used mostly for streaming audio and video. This is used for movie trailers, online radio station, etc.

Acrobat Reader

      Acrobat reader will allow you to read pdf files. The are widely used due to their ease of portability.
